Daphne is our first Lifetime Trustee

We are delighted that Daphne Cornell, who retired as a Trustee in 2020, has accepted our invitation to become our first ‘Honorary’ Life Trustee, in recognition not only of her longstanding service to the Almshouses but also for her lifelong commitment to social housing and caring for local people. Daphne has lived in Saffron Walden all her life, is a past Town Mayor and served on the District Council for 23 years. She remains involved with other charities in the town including Saffron Walden Day Centre, Mencap, and is an active member of Tenant Forum at Uttlesford District Council. She was also honoured to have the recently-opened first independent living development in Saffron Walden, Cornell Court, named after her.

As a small token of our thanks and esteem we presented Daphne with some flowers and a framed coloured picture of her in front of our Chapel, drawn by one of our residents, illustrator Sarah Turpin.
