Saffron Walden Almshouses feature on BBC Radio 4
We were pleased to be asked to contribute to a piece about almshouses for BBC Radio 4’s You and Yours programme this week. Our resident Catherine recorded an interview outlining the benefits of living in an almshouse community, and what it’s like to live here at King Edward VI Almshouses in Saffron Walden. She explained that the Almshouses are open to people with a connection to the town who are on a low income and have limited savings, and praised the sense of community, beautiful buildings and grounds, and idyllic location. She also mentioned that residents are well supported by a dedicated team which includes staff, Trustees, and a team of local tradespeople.
The programme also featured Nick Phillips, CEO of the Almshouse Association, and Dr Alison Pooley, Associate Professor at the University of Suffolk, who has been researching almshouses and their use. You can listen to the programme on BBC Sounds – the piece about almshouses is at about 29 minutes in.
